Meet the Counselor - Traci Tate

I've been with the Humboldt School system for ten years.  I taught science at the high school for nine years before transferring to this position.  I received my Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Tennessee at Martin.  I am an active member of the American School Counselors Association, Tennessee School Counselors Association (TSCA), and Martha Polk Chapter of  TSCA.  I will be serving as treasurer for Martha Polk chapter for the next two years.  I've been married for ten years and have two children.  I am also involved with several local organizations and serve in various leadership roles. I look forward to working with the students of Stigall Middle School and to creating a counseling environment that will guide our children to make the best decisions possible.

Stigall Middle School Counseling Program

The Stigall Middle School counseling programs follows the Tennessee School Counseling and Career Guidance Standards for grades 5 and 6.  These standards focus on three areas - Academic Development, Personal/Social Development, and Career Development.  The Tennessee School Counseling and Career Guidance Standards are statements of what students should know and be able to do as a result of participating in a school counseling program. Since the purpose of such a program is to ensure that all students can achieve school success through academic, career and personal/social development experiences, these standards represent what a school counseling and career guidance program should contain and establish similar goals, expectations, support systems and experiences for every student.  The organizational design of the standards reflects the nine standards in the National Standards for School Counseling Programs developed by the American School Counselor Association, which, in turn, are based on the three widely accepted and interrelated areas of student development: academic, career, and personal and social development.

The standards and expectations

Stigall Middle School Guidance Program is also in the process of tailoring it programs to meet the requirements of the Tennessee Model for Comprehensive School Counseling (PDF format)

Overview of Guidance Programs

    Character Education

Stigall Middle School follows the Character Counts Six Pillars of character education.  The students participate in guidance classes that have the character trait as the foundation of the lesson.  Teachers also stress the importance of the character traits in their lessons each month. Character Education is part of the foundation for producing a child who will become a productive member of our community.

Character Traits Calendar for 2006-2007

    Character Trait Student

As part of the Character Education program, teachers honor one student each character trait period with Character Student Award.  Teachers select one student from their room or homeroom that exhibit the current character trait.

    Student of the Month

This program honors students who demonstrate good conduct, citizenship, present each day of school, and perform to the best of the ability throughout the entire month.  Students are selected by teachers each month.

    Girl Force Plus

Girl Force Plus is a new program to Stigall Middle School. We have partnered with LeBonheur Coordinated School Health program.  The program has selected twenty female students from both grades. Girl Force is a program that covers body image, physical activity and nutrition. We are creating an after school program that covers these areas and many more for girls that would benefit from the programs offered.  Some of the activities include:

·        Nutrition

·        Etiquette

·        True Colors/ Discovering yourself

·        Stress relief

·        Drug/ Alcohol Awareness

·        Financial information

·        Community service project (adopting flower beds at school)

Girl Talk and Guiding Good Choices are programs that are for mothers and daughters. Girl Talk teaches mothers how to communicate with daughters about sex and other female issues. Guiding Good Choices is geared more at parents talking to their kids about drugs and alcohol. These are both two-hour sessions that last 4-5 weeks. The girls will also participate in “Through the eyes of a student.” Everyone will receive a camera and asked to take pictures of things that mean something to them or that they find interesting. We will collect all cameras and make a calendar for teachers and parents at Stigall Middle School.    To end the year, we have a formal sit down dinner with the girls in the program and their parents. Students will display things they have worked on throughout the year as well as show off their knowledge of dinner etiquette. The girls will also be invited to attend Girl Force “Plus” Summer Camp. This 3-day camp will focus mainly on nutrition, physical activity and body image. We plan on including girls outside of the program to attend.

West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx Community Programs

Stigall Middle School participates in two programs sponsored by the  Tennessee Diamond Jaxx baseball team -- Ribbee's Reading Program and Honor Roll Nights.  This is our second year to participate in these programs.  Ribbee's Reading Program: Baseball, Books and You is a reading program that was developed to encourage reading in all grade levels in West Tennessee. The goal of the program is to reward local children for reading and make them a winner with the Diamond Jaxx!  Each student who reads 10 books at their appropriate level will receive two general admission tickets for one of our specified "Ribbee's Reading Program" nights at Pringles Park during the 2006 season.  The Diamond Jaxx Honor Roll program has been developed to congratulate West Tennessee students for excelling in their schoolwork! Students selected to participate in the Diamond Jaxx Honor Roll Program will receive a special letter that can be used as a voucher for two (2) complimentary tickets to the specified Diamond Jaxx game.  In addition, on each Honor Roll night, a pre-game ceremony will be held on the field where each child will be able to say his or her name and the school that they attend. Each student will also be presented with a Diamond Jaxx Honor Roll Certificate signed by the Diamond Jaxx mascot, Ribbee.
