Welcome to East End Magnet Academy Visual arts classes taught by Mrs. Regina Crawley. I teach using the national standards for visual arts. The six basic national art standards are:
1. Students will understand and apply media, techniques, and processes.
2.Students will use knowledge of structures and functions.
3. Students will choose and evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas.
4. Students will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.
5. Students will reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others.
6. Students will make connections between visual arts and other disciplines.
Kindergarten has been painting using cool colors for rectangles and squares as well as warm colors of oil pastels inside neutral colored stamped circles. By doing this we review shapes and learn about the color wheel.
First grade has made a collage of spring forsythia flowers in a vase. The yellow flowers are complimented by a purple vase. Complimentary colors are across from each other on the color wheel. They are also reviewing basic forms: sphere, cone, cube, pyramid. and cylinder for the T-CAP test.
Second grade students have watched a video of an art lesson on painting. They have drawn a large fish to paint. They are learning words like opaque or transparent .
Third grade students made a tissue paper stained glass window in the style of George Rouault and they can be seen in the windows of the cafeteria when you drive by. It is prettier on the inside with the light shining through. Currently they are learning about the Egyptian cannon of art and are doing a picture of King Tut inside his tomb. After T-Cap we will learn how to write in hieroglyphics and add a secret message to our pictures .
Fourth grade students wrote haiku poems to go with their seascape picture. Some are displayed outside the art room.. Currently they are working on a pencil drawing of a president. They are learning about value in shading lightest to darkest.
Fifth grade students have watched a slide presentation of installation art and discussed the reasons for making art and the views of the artist as he shares his opinions with the viewers. Each student has been asked to make a poster about a cause he or she feels strongly about. Some are writing and drawing and collaging magazine pictures to include everything from "Stay away from Steroids" to "Let's wear Jeans to School". Of course there are many posters on "Don't do Drugs", " Don't Pollute" etc.
Check out Scoop's Art Scene in the Jackson Sun. We have had many of our children's art published from time to time. I have illustrated a children's book Gran the Great, Gran the Grouch which is for sale at City Drugs. It is about a little boy and his grandmother from his point of view. He learns that her rules are for his safety and that she loves him a lot. The author, Kay Smith, is a retired teacher from Union City. We will be glad to autograph the book for you if you buy one. - Mrs. Crawley
